The balcony theory

Whenever I am at the beach, I take note of how many people are using their balconies or front yards at all of the houses along the esplanade.

Have you ever noticed more than a handful? Nah, neither have I. This isn’t just during the day or night, or weekends and weekdays - it is every single time. I always wonder why they built such expensive houses when they hardly utilise the best thing about them - fresh air coming straight off of the ocean and a completely uninterrupted view of the the ocean as it meets the sky.

Is it too cold? Too windy? Are they too busy trying to make money to pay down such a big mortgage? Are they already sick of the view that brought them to the beach only years ago? This brings me to my next point - nothing is ever going to be perfect.

Yep, it’s true. We, as a species, have been so damn good at changing the world around us so that we are actually comfortable.. all the freaking time! Since when should this be normal? For you to get real, to get the most out of life, you have to make do with what the world gives you. If we only wait for the ‘perfect beach weather’, we only get to see it, at most, 30 visits per year. What the hell is that?!

Don’t wait for the perfect weather to enjoy things like the beach, don’t wait for the perfect house on the esplanade to enjoy a view - go out there, get uncomfortable and enjoy what the world has got to offer you. Who knows? You will probably be getting more out of the experience than if you were to be living in one of those houses on the esplanade anyways.
