No room for ego.
Kill your ego.
In Greek, ego literally means ‘I’. Your ego, though, isn’t you, it is a secondary layer to who you are - it sees you in another light, it has it’s own motives.
With my sport science background, I once saw how an ego could be useful. People used it to inflate their self belief, to hold their power and ability over others creating a mental edge or by making comparisons between self and others that created a sense of hierarchy and entitlement. Ego is powered by competition with others, it brings what is external to the internal. It was seen as a tool through my degree, but at some point I started to see it as an anchor.
The ego is COMPLETELY unnecessary for obtaining your goals or becoming your best self. I am under the firm belief that the only true competition is between you and yourself. Because ego brings the outside world in, it keeps other people within your sites, limiting your self growth. Don’t look to people as a way of making self comparisons that boost your confidence or as tools to achieving a goal - use others as a form of inspiration, benchmarking, learning from etc.
My advice, don’t leave any room for ego in your life. The second you begin to feel it rear it’s ugly head, pause, notice what triggered it and chase that down. Was it a lack of self-confidence? Was it jealousy after seeing someone with something you are working toward? The list goes on. Once you begin to catch out this thinking, you may begin to notice what I did - ego is detrimental to your self development.
If you don’t control your ego, it can become so intertwined with your true self that it can suffocate your own self growth, self image and even alter your actions in a way that directs you away from your true North. It’s an ugly thing that I can read on people before they even open their mouths. You can be outrageous, show your true colours and gather attention by being your true self, but it doesn’t mean that you are doing it to feed an ego. You can truly believe in your ability to achieve your goals, you can even back yourself when the odds are completely stacked against you and you STILL DON’T NEED TO HAVE AN EGO.
